Have a pond in nw Oklahoma that has had no run off since August last year. Holding up well but we're in our wet season now and so far no wet yet! Farm has a live stock well put in by oilfield,so it should be fairly deep. If i can come up with a large pump to be driven off pto of tractor and can pump it about 500 foot to the pond what problems should we be looking for. Just wondering since this won't be rainwater and probably is hard water. Pond down about 6 foot now and has about ten more to bottom. How slowly should we add or will it make a difference. Temp will be colder,ph,ect.
thanks in advance b

Bill,

That's an interesting concept...using the PTO to pump the water. Have you found a pump(s) which will accomplish that and what is the pumping rate?

As you probably know, it takes a lot of water to make a dent in the level of a sizable pond.

Depending on flow rates and the existing volume of the water in the pond, I wouldn't worry so much about the temps but would be concerned more about lack of DO in the well water. Several past posts about approaches to aerate well water before placing in pond and that should also cause some movement toward ambient temps.

How large is your pond and do you have any idea how many gpms you will be pumping? Any problems with hydrogen sulfide in the well water?

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

The pond is a small one, about 1 1/2 acre full, and about 18 ft in the large part of it! I'm just in the idea stage now and have just started gathering info. As far as the water,we have never used the well since we've owned the farm. Don't know anything on the water yet, will get into it a little more after wheat harvest! How do you test for hydrogen sulfide? We seem to be more dry than wet here so the pump setup i'm thinking would be a little more usefull than a windmill. Cousin has small pond in area and drilled a well so it wouldn't go dry, not much help from what i've seen with a windmill! b

Meadowlark---There are several sod farms near me and they all use PTO powered pumps to water. The biggest one I've seen was a 6" pump running 300+ feet of 4" irrigation pipe. It was pumping out of a nearby 1 acre pond. It lowered the level in the pond about 4" over an eight hour period. I'm sure someone here can do the math to figure the volume of water that is.

I'll start treating my wife as good as my dog when she starts retrieving ducks.

Bill - H2S or Hydrogen Sulfide smells like rotten eggs in lower doses but can lose the smell at higher rates. It is the second most lethal gas behind cyanide. Miners used canary's in cages to test for the gas. They make expensive monitors or test tubules. You could put a small amount in a can and let evaporate. The smell would get stronger as the water evaporated. I would be very surprised if you had any in your well water. Maybe you meant a test for sulfur?
