I always paint my new shiny traps a drab color. Try to paint the trap to look like a rock or log under water. Minnows shy away from shiny things underwater. Why they don't like the vinyl coated traps I don't know unless the coating makes the wire appear thicker. Vinyl probably has not affect when catching crayfish. Not saying the vinyl doesn't catch fish just fewer fish compared to plain wire mesh. You can run the test yourself for verification.
