Depending on your geographical area, I use duck decoys as my flotation devices connected to the diffuses base by a small chain. I leave about 1' of play in the chain so it is not in tension all the while my decoy moving back and forth in the pond.
At will, I can drive by in my boat, grab my decoy and pull up diffuses to surface for maintenance or replacement.

Are there aeration systems that use a different kind of deffuser that need very little maintenance?

Supposedly, the PTFE (Teflon) membrane sticks on my system are maintenance free. I do not have enough time on mine to comment on that claim.

I've noticed another phenomenon that causes large bubbles to form from the membrane diffuser in my deeper tank that has a smaller circumference:
The diffuser is mounted to a shower drain via two zip ties. The zip ties go around the horizontal pipe connected to the diffuser under the diffuser and through slots in the drain to hold it in place. The diffuser is not sitting level due to the bottom horizontal pipe assembly sliding slightly off of the two zip ties. I did this when I cleaned the membrane off with a push broom. The air wants to flow to the higher side of the membrane diffuser causing a sporadic large bubble.
It's not the film this time as the membrane is clean.

Kind of makes sense to me. The air in the diffuser will try to escape from the highest point in the diffuser. Effectively, you are using only the highest area of the diffuser. Less holes in that smaller area with same cfm. The interior of the diffuser fills with air then relieves the pressure as a big bubble?
Maybe you have just taught us the importance of placing the diffuser as level as possible to optimize its performance?

I try and screw up as much as I can to teach others not to so the same! 
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

LOL!!! Having spent the last 15 years of my career being the guy pulled into projects to figure out what went wrong and fix it, I can say with great confidence we often gain far more understanding of a process when things go wrong than when they go right! Keep up the good work!!
