Hello,
While walking last night we noticed a large amount of erosion around the drain pipe all the way through to the back of the dam. It is still solid on top but not sure who can help me to fix it.
It is about a 2 1/2 acre pond in Cloverdale, IN. Any help would be MUCH appreciated!
I am new to this site so not sure how communication exactly works - but you can also email me.
Thanks! Lisa

Welcome to the Forum, cdalegang!! Sounds like your dam dam had some seepage that is now becoming a breech. You can call most any competent trenching or earth moving contractor to bring out a back/track hoe to dig out the pipe, recompact good clay under it, and as the pipe is reinstalled. Install "anti-seepage" collars in 2 places or use something like this Stone/Bentonite pre-mix Here is a basic explanation of Dam requirements... Dams However you proceed, do NOT wait, this leak, and a rain event could very quickly result in a total, catastrophic failure of your Dam and endanger anything down stream!!

"Dam Dam?" Is that a dam that is having problems vs. just a dam that is not having problems? I like that Rex. Just messing with you but that used to be my dad's favorite word when something went wrong. I think it was his version of SNAFU.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Can you drain water out of your pond immediately? If you can, get the water level below your outlet pipe by a foot or two. You do not want water flowing out along the outside of your pipe at all. Unfortunately, I'm in IN also and can show you pictures of what happens when that pipe leakage grows and washes out your overflow pipe. It will break your heart.
If you have a valved drain line, open the valve wide open. If not, can you put in a siphon system? There are folks who've done it with PVC pipe and videos on Youtube show how. I did it with 100' long coils of the corrugated pipe you can get at any landscape supply place, but didn't have much rise to get up and over.

Great point, DN. Lowering the water level could add a big safety margin till permanent repairs can be made. Installing a siphon system temporarily can often be done for under $100 using 4" sewer and drain PVC pipe.
