Grandpa always said if there is lighting and snow on the ground its the end of winter.

I'm not sure I'd trust that one.
About 25 years ago I got stranded for several hours in a "thunder snow" near the end of November. It dropped about 10 inches of snow in less than an hour. The remaining winter went down hill from there.
