Or is there too much water turn over? I can't seem to find too much information on the subject.

I'm not sure if I even need to fertilize, but I think I should first find out if I'm able to or not.

For ponds with short turnover times and constant flow through, it is best to do what Mentor Bob Lusk did in Richmond Mill; use feeders to boost the productivity. It works well if you have enough feeders per acre. Fertilization does not work well when there is flow through situations.

Ok. I'm already feeding so that's good to know.

I appreciate the quick response Bill

You may or may not need fertilizer and it may or may not work. It depends. Tell us what the water looks like. Have you had water and soil samples tested. That is where you start.

This may sound stupid, but why fertilize a pond. I thought that made algae.

In ponds with poor productivity (low fish production due to reduced base of the food chain - plankton) it is common to fertilize if soil and water conditions are good. Its like fertilizing a pasture to improve grass growth to feed cows or like adding it to a garden to improve crop production.

If done correctly it actually reduces FA growth as the plankton bloom shades out much of the light from reaching the FA on the bottom.

As with all tools there is a right time to use fertilizer and times not to use it.

Ewest - this is one of those things that I don't think I need to do, but I wanted to look into it. Everything seems to be doing pretty good without it, but I'm open to better if that makes sense.

One of my concerns right now is that I'll be stopping the feeding because I'm adding a few HSB and I want them to come off of pellets.

I have tested the water before, but I haven't recently. I honestly dont even remember the important information to look for and I'd have to go back to my notes.

The main reason I wanted to do it was to kill off some of my widgeon grass, but I may just end up spot treating that as I think it will be easier.

Well I guess I dont even have to read very far to figure out I wont be fertilizing. I suppose I'll have to deal with the crystal clear water then!

Thanks E. I've book marked that page.
