I talked to a gentlemen the other day that has a beautiful pond in central Wisconsin. I asked him how he kept it so clean. He told me he puts half of a rail road tie near the inlet of his pond and it keeps the pond in better shape than the chemicals he used before. The pond must be close to a couple acres. My question...isn't creosote dangerous or carsenigenic?

It is highly carcinogenic. It is like a surfactant that want to stick to boilogicals and if small enough will break down the cell wall and destroy any bacteria. We are just big bacteria and it just takes more to kill us.
