1/2" pipe is not half the size of 1". If you pump 5 gpm down each 250 foot half inch line you will have 22psi pressure loss on level ground. This means your pump will lose about 50 ft of vertical head just from your line alone. 1" at 10gpm gives you a pressure drop of 6.5psi and you lose 14 feet of vertical head on your pump.

You should talk to someone that sells water systems. It will probably save you some time and definitely some $$$.
