It's all about pressure.
What makes you think that gravitational forces are the sole operating forces that a pump has to deal with?
They aren't, but friction loss can be mitigated some by going to a larger diameter pipe.
That is true, and if you pump up and blow (vent) to atmosphere, eliminating internal pressure, it's even better as long as you never fill the pipe up where the pump has to push it thru.
