new member and great site! i am building a new pond this weekend that will be between 1/2 to 1 acre. my main goal is to catch and eat fish. i will be feeding and wanted to know what combo of fish would be the best? im am not interested really in lmb more into bg and cc and possibly crappie. after reading i am hearing they take over in small bodies of water. this pond with be between 2-3ft to 12-15ft. no damn and being fed from a run off...thanks in advance

If you're going to feed, look into RBT during the Fall/Winter/Spring. Don't overlook HSB and HBG too.

thanks much for the advice. is there such a thing of making crappie my predator fish and do they co exist well with hbg or cnbg if i skip lmb and cc? i am mainly looking for table fare and hopefully get a few ducks in too. i am const the pond this weekend so its a blank canvas. can you reccomend some habitat ideas too. i see you have a lot of experience and i am very appreciative. thanks for your help.

If it was my pond I would skip the crappie.

If I was building a new pond today, and wanted to eat fish from it, the first question I'd ask myself is how many pounds of fish would I expect to take out of the pond on a yearly basis? Once I got that figured out, then I could determine what fish species I needed to stock.

If I were building a new pond today, I'd make durn sure that I had all the cover built and ready to go in the pond as soon as the last shovel ful of dirt was moved. It's much easier to place it in the pond in the correct position when the pond is dry.

As for ducks, what species are in your area that you expect to attract? What time of the year do you want to attract them?

Fisheater, welcome to PB and the best of luck of luck putting in your pond. Is it going to be a dug pond? We didn't get the ducks this year till the season was over. We saw over a hundred this weekend(mallards and gadwalls). Good luck.
