The West Virginia Aquaculture Association (WVAA) and PennAg Industries Association (Pennsylvania Agriculture/Aqauculture) will be holding two days of workshops on January 25 and 26 in Martinsburg, WV. This year I was given permission by my fellow WVAA board members to help organize two days of concurrent workshops related to ponds. The main purpose of the conference is for producers -- but us pond enthusiasts will have our own sessions! We are becoming more and more of a recognized economic part of aquaculture. Full information and registration can be found here: Mid-Atlantic Aquaculture Conference And -- how would you like to win a brand new $1400 YSI ProODO oxygen meter with a 4 m cable and a small case? Raffle tickets will be available at the conference. Mr. Pond Boss himself, Bob Lusk, will be the opening speaker for the pond sessions starting on Friday morning.Bob will be around for both days. A number of other notable Pond Boss friends will be there also. The cost is only $45 per person, and that includes lunch both days, plus a reception featuring local aqauculture and aquaponics products prepared by chef's from several culinary institutes. Please feel free to contact me via PM if you have questions. Regards, Ken Pond Session Workshop Listing Session II – Growing fish for fun.
Recreational Ponds-Possibilities for the Mid-Atlantic Region: More and more people are buying land and building ponds for recreational purposes. Bob Lusk, The “Pond Boss” makes his living traveling across the nation helping landowners design, build, stock and manage private lakes. He will draw on years of experience as a private fisheries biologist and lake management consultant as he highlights new ideas and trends about management of private waters and what they are producing around the nation. Bob Lusk , Editor, Pond Boss Magazine
Permits and permitting It is important that people understand what permits are required and how to get them. Panelists will include representatives from PA Dept of Agriculture, Pa Fish and Boat Commission, the WV Department of Agriculture, and WV Division of Natural Resources. In addition to describing permits and the permitting process, panelists will answer questions about this topic. Dr. Tony LaBarbera – PA Dept of Agriculture Brian Wisner, PA Fish & Boat Commission Rob Nichols, WV Department of Agriculture Jim Hedrick, Fisheries Biologist, WV DNR
Fish for Aquatic Weed Control Aquatic weeds are a common problem in ponds throughout the region. What kind of weeds are in my pond and how might I control them? What might it cost to control weeds in my pond and how long will it take? This presentation will seek to answer these questions and more. Ken Semmens, Extension Specialist – Aquaculture, WVU Extension
Building a pond – Do’s and Don’t’s A well designed and constructed pond can be a pleasure and improve property value. This presentation will describe the features of a well-built pond and discuss some of the pitfalls associated with pond construction. NRCS, WV
Personal Aquaponics Aquaponics efficiently utilizes water to grow both fish and plants in a sustainable manner. Imagine a personal system to complement your garden with the fish of your choice growing plants that do not require weeding or watering! This presentation will describe an inexpensive system that you can make yourself. Matthew Ferrell, RMF Aquaculture Facility Coordinator, WVU Extension
Products for managing your pond Vendors selling products for your pond will describe how they are used by the pond owner.
Purchasing fish and stocking your pond Ponds can be managed for different purposes and stocking fish can be an important tool for pond management. What fish should be stocked, and how can an individual purchasing fish make a good investment? Panelists will include individuals who sell fish to pond owners, a pond owner, and a fisheries biologist with WV DNR. Ken Grymala, Vice President of WVAA will moderate. Ken Grymala, Moderator Mark Frey – Frey’s Fish Farm Mike Nardella, Rainbowhead Farms Travis Trent, Pond Owner, Stafford, VA Jim Hedrick, Biologist, WV DNR
Aquaculture Education Recirculating aquaculture systems and now aquaponic systems are useful teaching tools. Growing fish and vegetables in these systems engage students and provides an opportunity to apply lessons of chemistry, math, biology, animal husbandry, and horticulture.
Managing Water Quality in your pond What is good water quality and what can be done to assure that the fish in your pond have every advantage? Josette La Hee, Vertex
Other activities: Reception featuring aquaculture products from the region. Sample small treats prepared by chefs at Martinsburg Holiday Inn using trout, catfish, striped bass, and other aquaculture products. This event is made possible through the Penn Ag industries and the Marketing division of the WV Department of Agriculture. It is also a good time to visit with Aquaculture Forum speakers and participants.
Tour of the National Center for Cool and Cold Water Aquaculture A tour of this USDA lab is scheduled for Friday evening after dinner. The mission of this laboratory is to support and enhance the nation’s cool and cold water aquaculture production through research and technology transfer. Our research programs focus primarily on rainbow trout and include applied genetics and breeding, integrated aquatic animal health, aquaculture engineering, nutrition, physiology, culture and management, and product quality. Ultimately, we envision a US trout product whose production is efficient and has a minimal impact on the environment, and provides a healthy option for consumers being low in fat and having high levels of Omega-3 fatty acids.
Posters featuring aquaculture research Aquaculture Research conducted at West Virginia University is presented in a variety of posters. Some of these posters will be featured in the Research update. They are available for viewing throughout the Aquaculture Forum (Saturday) and may feature more detail than is possible in the update summary.
Buffet meal at noon each day. Registration for the conference includes a buffet meal prepared at the Holiday Inn and served at noon each day of the conference.
Vendor Booths Select vendors will be featured in the Blue Ridge Board Room. West Virginia Aquaculture Association Business Meeting The West Virginia Aquaculture Association is a producer’s organization committed to supporting and promoting the West Virginia aquaculture industry. WVAA members have promoted aquaculture products at the West Virginia State Fair, Taste of West Virginia celebrations, Aquaculture Open House and the annual Aquaculture Forum. WVAA sponsors educational workshops and promotes marketing efforts for West Virginia aquaculture products as a food and for recreation. If your business uses farm raised products and you believe aquaculture has a future in West Virginia, consider participating in this organization.
Door Prizes Door prizes will be awarded at the end of the meeting.

Come on up! If we get enough Pond Bossers, we may just have to have a Catmandoo fish fry and roadkill cook-off.
(On your way to the conference, please don't pass by anything we might use!)

I've got some swirling business trips this month, so I can't commit, but it looks like a solid gig.

Sunil -- we'd sure like to see you there. You would be a great asset as a very successful pond owner from PA. I'm going to be moderating a Q&A session on Saturday, and you would be perfect to help answer some of the questions.
And, what fun will a gathering of pond folks be without you being there?

I may try to make it, too, Ken. Should I bring my rifle for Sunil?

I may try to make it, too, Ken. Should I bring my rifle for Sunil? I originally read this as "Should I bring my rifle, or Sunil?" My interpretation is funnier.

Based on the weather forecast, we've waived the black-tie/tuxedo/corfam shoe requirements, and substituted snowmobile suits, mukluks, and mad-bomber hats.
Hope to see you all there. Especially with Bob Lusk there, we'll have a blast while we learn.

I don't see how Sunil could be less dangerous than an rifle. At least rifles have a safety switch and can be unloaded. The same can not be said of Sunil.

Oh, and Todd -- bring Sunil. I think he is less dangerous, but still a lot of fun. I'm trying to get out of my court obligation Friday, so we'll see. However, if the roads are that bad, I'm not sure I want to drive across I-68 through Garrett County! If I do, Sunil is definitely coming with me. If we get stuck, I can have him push or use him for traction under the drive wheels. Really, it's a win-win the way I see it.

The temperature of the snow you picked up on your boots, while transitioning into your warmer climate, may just make you slip! Yep, goes to ice when compressed, really quick!

I have high hopes for 2013 on a personal, professional and unprofessional basis. This is the first year that WV and PA Aquaculture is officially recognizing the very important contributions that non-producer fisheries management brings to empirical science, the community, and to the economy. (MD is boycotting us for some strange reason -- including media news releases within miles of the multi-state conference.) As an active member of the West Virginia Aquaculture Association, it has taken me at least seven years to get here. I need all your help to make it successful. With the addition of Matt Rayl to Pond Boss, we may be able to do more outside of state extension services and other gov't and professional agriculture/aquaculture groups. When I first really pushed for it, we struggled with a title for our segment of aquaculture. What should we name the non-producer and non-professional fisheries people, like me and so many others on Pond Boss. Are we any different than non-producer farmer "Master Gardeners" who must provide all kinds of free advice as part of their internship and continuing qualifications? They are strongly supported by local state Extension Services in nearly every state. With all that, I sure wish JHAP could join us to do "Pond Management Standup Comedy." I'm still hoping that weather and the judiciary system will permit Todd L., and Sunil to join us (it isn't what you might think -- Todd is supposed to represent a DUI client in court, and Sunil has had nothing to do with any of it.) I can work either or both of them into the program on Friday or Saturday. They too bring the best of pond management fun and education. So, are we non-professionals, un-professionals, freaks ...? P.S. -- Sunil and Todd, we've got room to put you up on Friday and/or Saturday evenings. Lynda would just like to know how many are joining us for dinner on Saturday evening. Time to get on the road to pick up the Pond Boss himself! I hope to see a lot of friends from WV, VA, MD, and PA at the conference. Ken

Serious bummer. I was hoping to put Sunil to work. We have we lot of wonderful people, but I was really hoping you could be a Pond Boss greeter.
For anyone who has never met Sunil, he is one of those rare individuals who is almost impossible not to like. At Pond Boss I, he greeted Lynda and me at the convention center entrance like relatives ready to pass on a huge inheritance.
Plus, he has built a fishery like I've never fished anywhere else. Think Cabellas or BassPro aquarium fish that are eager to bite, and that cover several acres.
