Using Salt in Water With Fish.
Sunil’s Question: Which is the bad salt to use for fish? Iodized or non-iodized?
Responses: Catmandoo- I only use the non-iodized salt -- Morton's Kosher Salt. It should be available in nearly every supermarket in 3 lb. boxes. It is supposedly near pure NaCl, without additives. Table salt contains idodine for health reasons (you probably have gotta be my age to remember goiters), and it includes other chemicals to keep it from clumping when it gets damp.
DD1 - Why is iodized the bad salt?
BCody - My guess is the iodine and other unknown anti-clummping additives introduce an added stress to the fish who are probably initially stressed which is why one is using salt as a treatment.
Ewest - Common table salt is widely used in fish transport. It should contain no iodine. The concentration of salts in the blood of most fish is 1 to 1.2 percent. Adding salt to the transport water reduces the mineral difference between the water and fish blood which lessens the effects caused by this osmotic imbalance. Salt is added to make solutions of .05 to 1 percent (500 to 10,000 ppm), depending on the species of fish. This is equivalent to 0.4 to 8 pounds of salt per 100 gallons of water. Use the lower rates on freshwater fish.
It is importance to prevent physical injury and physiological stress when handling fish. Damage to the slime (mucus) layer, scales, and skin of the fish can result in infection. It also causes excessive uptake of water by freshwater fish.
Salt (0.3 -1.0 percent) may be used in the transport water to minimize osmotic stress and infection.
