Installed a Vertex aerator in our 1+ acre pond last year. Average depth is 5 feet with deepest part 10 feet. Ran it all winter here in VA. Spawn this year looked very light. Fishing was great before the aerator but is now very difficult. Pond has only bass and bluegills. Surface feeding activity at night is very light compared to before aearation. No fish kill has been observed. Surface algae is less this year that before aeration but still strong vegetation in pond. Can anyone explain the poor fishing?

Marv, consider that the fish now are able to utilize the entire pond since youve installed the finest aeration system possible (had to add that part)in a Vertex. Is it possible that they are now not as dependent on outside food sources and perhaps are just getting hook shy. My experience is that the fish hit more often and harder in a well aerated pond, but are found all over the pond vs the shallow atmospheric only aerated water you had prior. Perhaps Bill C will "wade" in on this, Ted

Marv,

My limited experience with aeration (Vertex also) is only 4 months now in my 3 acre pond and if anything the fishing has improved. The spawn retention/survivability is definitely improved along with water quality. Perhaps your fishing decline is not related to the aeration but to other factors?
