I've always has better luck dissolving it in pond water first as an alum slurry and then distributing it. At least that is what all the literature I've seen says to do. Did you do a test on a smaller sample of your pond water to see how much you would need as in the link below? (Scroll down method 2 for Alum) If not you may have been guessing on the amount to use. http://www.luresext.edu/aquaculture/clearingmuddyponds.htm
