As Travis is alluding to you simply need to use a herbicide that is more selective for watermeal. It appears you have not. What is the watermeal selective herbicide?....Joe Joe, I missed your affinity for the water lilies so not sure there is one. Otherwise I would have suggested a flurodone based herbicide.
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.
