Interestingly a couple of weeks ago I dumped a possom in the same manner. Later that day I went to the same spot to dump some bluegill leftovers, the possom was gone.
When I was having trouble with the raccoons killing my chickens, I "dispatached" one of them. I threw it's carcass on the back side of the pond dam. There were several turkey buzzards enjoying it before I got back up to the house. I thought it was pretty incredible that they could find it that fast.
