Story on the news tonight about Blue Green Algae infestation in Big Tex. It is recommended that nobody go in the water and they are even worried about the spray from boats. It is always present but the much shallower water(and I'll bet clearer) is allowing the stuff to reproduce at an alarming rate. It is blowing to the shoreline.
Lusk could durn near chunk a rock and hit the lake from his house.
Just wondering whether ducks, etc could spread it to ponds. I know very little about it.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

It was just a matter of time. It has been slowly crossing the state from north to south since the 4th of July.

That's pretty bluntly put Kelly. The lake is closed and "contact with the water is prohibited".

Dave, we have been cleaning out a few ponds around our area. The water is a slimy green and very nasty smelling. I am not enough of an expert to know if the algae present is blue-green algae or not. But I would think it would happen in ponds first as they would be shallow even before the lakes.
We were at Lake Texoma a few weeks ago and the water was fine. It is amazing how fast it can change.

Algae reproduces at an amazing rate. The blue green stuff is pretty easy to recognize when it is floating by the shoreline.

I have never had blue green algae but I think it is the last thing I would want. This is just information I came across while reading the Small Scale Aquaculture book many think so highly of. The book said that Silver Carp eat Blue Green Algae. However the Silver Carp is an invasive fish from Asia that has been seen on TV as the fish that jumps into boats. It is believed they do this because the noise of the boat motors causes an irritation to them. This is just information and not any suggestion. This early Dec. 2009 photo shows Illinois River silver carp jump out of the water after being disturbed by sounds of watercraft. Many fear that the Asian carp, which can reach 4 feet long and weigh up to 100 pounds, will wreak havoc, not by attacking native fish, but starving them out by gobbling up plankton.

Bluegreen algae takes the form of many species - probably into the thousands of species depending on whose taxonomic philosophy you follow. ALL ponds have at least some bluegreen algae (Cyanobacteria) of some specie/s as a part of the normal algal community, although it only becomes the prodominant specie/s or problem when the water chemistry favors their growth requirements or the chemistry is 'out of balance'. Balanced water chemistry usually encourages the other more beneficial species.

Bill the blue green algae I saw in a picture was an awful thick slime that covered the oars of a boat when dipped into it.

Some bluegreens are bad, some not so bad or even apparent. Nuisance level also depends on density of the alga and how much the water chemistry is out of balance to favor the offending bloom. Some notorious problematic bluegreen species, when they are at low densities, are not even noticable.

I believe I read that there have been correlations drawn between blue-green algae exposure and resulting alzheimers later in life.

About 10 years ago a young boy died from the algae exposure at Grapevine Lake between Fort Worth and Dallas. The lake was quite low and they were swimming in a slough.
