hi,
i just bought a place with a swampy pond in back that im interested in restoring.
in spring theres about a foot of water with ducks, tree frogs and muskrats but in summer the grass & catails take over.

can anyone recommend a product to kill vegitation that is safe for the animals / frogs ??

thanks, any input would be appreciated.

Welcome to the PB forum brycorm, give us more info on the size of the pond and what type of pond you would like to build.
I don't have experience with eradicating vegetation but many on the forum do and hopefully they will chime in.

Welcome to the forum Brycorm! Do we have any other Maine forum members? Beautiful country up there.

Tell us more about your swamp/pond characteristics. Do you want to create a pond and establish a fishery or keep it a swamp? How large a BOW do you want to create? What species of fish interest you?

At first glance seems maybe excavation is a better option than herbicide application...it would increase the depth and size of your pond and also remove all the unwanted vegetation.

Ooops, I see I just repeated some of Scott's questions. Looking forward to your feedback - again welcome aboard!

Its a small area.... 1/2 - 3/4 acre so im thinking minimal impact & keep it swampy.
I would love to eliminate the grasses so some water remains ( 1/4 acre or so) to keep the ducks around.
i thought of excavating a small area but not sure how to reach into the middle since its deep mud....any tricks /special tools?

There are excavators (track hoes) out there with a 70' reach.
