I am trying to introduce a more productive and desirable food source for my pond in Barry, TX. It is about 12 acres and has large mouth, crappie and kittys. I wante dto introduce shad but I want to make sure I use the right shad and I see that threadfins may be the best bet. Any advice

Hello FamilyfishinMan and welcome to Pond Boss. Wow 12 acres, that is some pond!

I have been up in Montague county north of Ft.Worth this past weekend doing some survey work and I wish I had seen this post as we might have been able to look at your lake, FamilyFishinMan.

Main question: Is your lake a good candidate for shad success? You need a relatively consistent plankton bloom throughout the year. If your lake is clear and full of weeds, for example, then shad will likely not establish. If you are able to control weed growth and establish a plankton bloom in the spring then you will be a good candidate for shad stocking.

We stock mature threadfin shad from mid-April through mid-May.

I got some good advice this past week from a pond manager and I am going to survey and harvest first. I have good water quality already for my area nad i have a good enouigh size pond to handle shad but I beleive i hvae too many fish. Since a survey pro costs so much i am going to do my own. I am going fish the pond in quads and document all the fish caught by weight, length and location and bait type. I am also going to use my fish finder to try and get a good idea. Once I have done that I will determine how many i want to harvest. I am hoping after having a good harvest to open up the food chain and then continue that process for about a year and then maybe getting shad. I have crappie, cat and bass and grass carp and tons of perch and turtles. I will be killing a bunch of turtles as well
