The guy that showed me used wire from two coat hangers. Imagine the "L" shape. The longer part was about 12" long, the short end about 4" long. Make a fist, and hold the short end in your hand as loose as possible, with the long ends pointed straight forward. Walk slowly and when the two wires cross together, that's where the pipe or wire is.
