Tim, I know where your coming from. We deal with a lot of limestone around here. Which can play a lot of tricks on You if your not careful, or even if you are careful. I do a lot of water witching trying to track underground water so I have a good idea where the water might be when I'm digging the core, if it's not obvious. Sometimes You don't know if your going another foot or ten more feet.
