Excavation will be complete by Christmas! I have asked for some reading material as gifts, and am looking forward to your books!. Now I am working on the structure and have found the threads/pics very helpful. Obviously I will be collecting Christmas trees next month but does anyone have concerns about a large dead Apple Tree? I'm in NE Ohio and now have a 1+ acre solid clay hole 8-12' deep with no personality. Planning for the standard LBM/BG and occasional swim. As far as my wife is concerned it's for our labs (only way I get her to buy in on the project- told her it would extend their lives by 2 years). Anyway- great site! Apple Trees??

Hello VTX and welcome to Pond Boss. Yep I can tell you're gonna fit in just fine here.

Hang on and we'll get your apple tree question answered.

I was gonna make a crack about the answer depending upon whether or not it is a crab apple tree but I decided not to.

I put 3 semi-dwarf apple trees and a peach tree in the pond this Spring with no ill effects.

I doubt that it would be a problem.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

VTX, Welcome aboard. In your size pond that apple tree will be fine.I too scout around for Xmas trees each year and install 10-12 in our 1.2 acre pond and 5-6 in our .4 acre pond as they wont last long (especially in a well aerated pond)There are lots of ideas for structure and cover on this site. Be sure to plant them deep enough so they are "lab friendly" Id say that 2 year extension was a great way to go \:\)

Thanks for the replies! I'll be posting additional questions concerning aeration and fertilization soon. It's great to see how many enthusiastic pond owners are involved- awsome resource!
