I need to figure out how much volume in cubic inches and eventually gallons my biofilter is displacing in this tank. The biofilter (cylinder) is 38 inches long by 24 inches in diameter. As best i can tell 12 inches of it is under water.

I can easily determine the volume of the cylinder by
V= pie X radius squared times the height. Which if I'm correct comes out to 17, 182.08 cubic inches.

At first I thought I could just divide that in two to get how many cubic inches are displaces, but the cylinder could be divided in half two ways so that may not be right.

I've looked on the Internet without much luck.

Once I figure out how many cubic inches are displaced, I need to convert that to gallons and then subtract that from the volume of the tank water.

Yes, I know it would have been easier to calculate volume before adding the biofilter and I did that. Problem was when I realized the biofilter was going to displace water I dropped the water level to play it safe vs. a spill over. Unfortunately I didn't calculate water volume after I did so just before putting in the biofilter.

The biofilter takes two people to lift to take a depth of water measurement and frankly I don't want to do that.

In case you're wondering why I need to know this I need to know the volume of the tank water with the filter in it to determine how much ammonia to add to kick start the bacteria. We're talking only 0.30 oz. per 300 gallons.

Of course it's not a solid cylinder as there are spaces between the pieces sandwiched on the axle and the paddles create voids also, but I don't think I need to get that detailed although each paddle is on half of a 4 inch piece of PVC 4 inches long.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Cecil, you've got about 37 gallons underwater. You did the cubic inches correct. Just divide by 2 to reflect that one-half (roughly) of the volume of the cylinder is above water. Then convert the result to gallons. I come up with 37.2 gallons, which would be modified by your irregular shape and fact that it may not be exactly one-half in the water.

Thanks Mo. So I think I'm looking about 300 gallons of water in the tank.
