Depending how far you are up in Mi., it's getting late in the year for planting. I'd be tempted to plant winter wheat or winter oats and then overseed with rye. As long as it's not below freezing the wheat/oats should come up. I planted some a couple weeks ago and it's almost 6" tall now (winter wheat and buck forage oats). As for alum, it's not a slam dunk.
