Got your attention I wasn't sure where to post this but I guess here is as good as any. I have a question about Channel Cat behavior.

I have about 50 hand fed 2 yr old CC in my 1/3 acre pond. The last couple of weeks I have noticed them "balling" together in 2 or 3 masses about 2' under water. The only reason I know they are CC is because occassionally a couple separate and then rejoin the masses allowing me to identify them. The groups aren't going anywhere; apparently just circling.

I have only noticed this in the late afternoon and evening so far. Any idea whats up with this? Thanks

I have seen that behavior as well. I often see it in the Potomac River with wild CC. When I am wading fish for smallies, I'll see balls of 6"-12" CC. They'll be hugging the bottom, and then they'll ball up, but they always stay in a group. I am not really sure what they are doing. Perhaps it is a way to avoid predation, when numerous CC ball together, its harder for predators to prey on them?
