I sit here today with a heavy heart. This morning at about 3:10 PST my wife's father died.

This feels like such a one-two punch losing my father last year and now her father this year.

I'm posting this because I know many of you met my wife Ricki (aka JWHAP) at last year's Pond Boss conference.

I didn't want to burden the board with all the details of what has been going on in our family and apologize in advance for posting bad news yet again. This board is like family to me and many of you I consider personal friends and thus I felt inclined to post this news.

Ricki's dad, Charlie, was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease in February. He valiantly fought the disease as long as possible but finally succumbed last night.

I mentioned before that Ricki was in Pennsylvania last month for a couple of weeks. What I left out was that the primary purpose of the trip was to spend time with her dad, coordinate in home health care and home modifications to make her dad as comfortable as possible.

We will be traveling back to PA probably tomorrow evening to attend services.

Charlie was a man's man. He served in the Army and then worked until retirement in a steel mill. In his younger years he made annual trips to a remote lake in Canada (not sure where) to fish for pike. He loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing. He was very excited when we purchased our pond property and our goal (prior to him coming down with the disease) to have them (Ricki's mom and dad) visit the property this summer.

Spend as much time as you can with your loved ones. Life can change drastically very quickly.

I am very sorry as well, but glad Ricki had the opportunity to spend time with her Dad before he went.

Jeff it was a big help talking with you last year after our fathers died about the sametime. You now will have the experience to draw from to help out your lovely wife. My prayers are with your family.

In lieu of words, I'll offer a Prayer.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Ricki and Jeff our thoughts and prayers go out to you and all the family. We have no parents left and know your pain. We will light a candle for him. I'm sure he left you with some great memories which is a great legacy to leave.

Sorry to hear about the loss of Ricki's father. It is hard to lose a father, let alone both or your fathers in a short period of time.
My father has been gone for many years, yet I still think about him every day. Remember the good times as you mourn. It will help.

Thank you all for the kind words, thoughts and prayers, I truely appreciate it.

We were unable to get a flight out until early Thursday morning. The services are to be held on Friday. We'll be coming home on Monday. I'll probably be incommunicado until Tuesday (after I attend to some threads that require my immediate intervention).

Jeff and Ricki,

Please accept our condolences.

So many of us are in this "sandwich" generation of dealing with struggling parents and struggling offspring.

I believe we are only about an hour away from Ricki's home. If you should just need to get away from family and stress, please come visit and relax. We always have an extra room.

Lynda and Ken

Thanks once again everyone for the thoughts, prayers and kind words. The service was well attended, over 170 people signed the guest book. Ricki's dad was well loved and admired. We're here (in PA) until tomorrow, then we'll be flying back to CA.

It is so difficult to lose a loved one, especially a dad, right before Father's Day. It is very interesting how time really does heal these wounds, and if you had a good relationship and were involved in the care, over time it seems only the good memories remain.
I think once we lose our parents there is the overwhelming feeling of "I'm next." We love our family and friends, and there is some comfort here in knowing that your Father-In-Law didn't linger on and on with such a terrible disease like some do.
Take care of yourself and your wife.
