I like Reese or Gander. I think the younger the better for bonding with the animal, that is my personal experience.

Younger is probably better but I've never had a puppy. My last dog was two years old when I got her and I became her pet in no time.
I think Ava the Akita will fit right in. She's starting to get spoiled already.
