It isn't perfect as it cut my word list off at the m's. If the demand is high, I can post the rest of the list in a second post. The Z list alone is impressive in it's own right. Aarrgh! Hey, that list is useful!

I think "menads" is a bad word but I'm not sure.
At the very minumum it is not a very politically correct post. I believe they prefer the term "Little People." (as opposed to midget). You unintentionally blurred the issue? SURE you did.

You unintentionally blurred the issue? SURE you did. It absolutely was an innocent mistake as far as you can prove in a court of law.

Edited by jeffhasapond (January 12, 2008 07:45 AM) Edit Reason: I guess I'm gonna have to stop putting subliminal messages in the edit reason box. Bark like a dog. I really though no one was reading them. Squeal like a pig. I apologize if anyone was hurt in the process. You are naked and everyone in the room can see that you are naked. I promise to stop using the edit reason box for my own amusement. You want a peanut butter and cod fish sandwich.

I just discovered something interesting.
One of my ponds has two smallmouth bass in it. I decided to throw a small lure to catch one.
Sure enough, one of the smallies exploded on it, and gave me a great fight.
The smallmouth had been stocked at 12 inches, but was now a full 14 inches less than three months later.
I figured it had been eating some of the giant dragonfly nymphs that we have in abundance.
When I released the fish it hesitated at the surface and urpped up a leapard frog that measured 8 inches from snout to tip of longest leg. The frog appeared to have been alive in the last few minutes.
I haven't had any herons in the last few months so I've had an explosion of leapard frogs.
Apparently this is where some of them go.
Sorry, but I didn't have a camera with me.

I have a predictably large number of frogs at my new pond. It's good to be able to look forward to them getting snouthed down by the Smallies once these are stocked and grow large enough.

You know all this talk about frogs disappearing blah blah blah but I have never seen so many frogs in my life as this year. And I too have less herons etc. so I'm sure it's cause and effect.
Could it be the reduction of frogs across the country is at least partially due to drought conditions and the protection of frog eating birds like herons that were disappearing and less of a threat to frogs back when DDT was prevalent?

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

I still have BF tadpoles about 4" long that haven't even sprouted legs yet. They come up from the bottom like a rocket and blast bugs on the surface, suck 'em in with the snouth, and shoot right, straight back down into the darkness. Pretty sneaky and aggressive.

I think your tadpoles are getting a gulp of air not hitting bugs. IIRC they eat algae and detritus.

I'll go with the "gulp of air" explanation. Thanks for the tune-up. I am still convinced, tho, that the snouth is used. Another acknowledgement is the algae munching practice; also the snouth. thx

I catch some of the newly xformed BF's & feed them to the SMB. Lots of fun to watch! All summer I have been seeing ALOT of those small frogs dead on the bank & in the water. But there were hundreds still hopping around so I was'nt concerned. 3 Green Herons & 2 Kingfishers have worked on them in the last month though.

You know all this talk about frogs disappearing blah blah blah but I have never seen so many frogs in my life as this year. Plus one Cecil. We had a record number of frogs at our place this year. All along our south and east shoreline was loaded with them. We still have about the same number of herons so I can't directly attribute the frog population bonanza to that. Here is a photo that is representative of their density along the shore.....

So when are you frying up some frog legs, JHAP? Frogs are a highly protected species at our pond. Not by any local, state or federal agency but by JWHAP. She loves the frogs. When we had a contractor at our place in June the contractor picked up a little leopard frog and sailed it about 20 feet or so into the pond - just to see if it would get eaten by a bass. I though JWHAP was gonna come unglued. I had to forceably take the bottle of sunscreen spray from her hand just so the contractor wouldn't get SPF 40'd to death.
