OK, if y’all insist...Bowfin...

¼ acre “grow-out”/HSB/TAFCNBG/ same sex tilapia pond.
In order to assist control over population of BG spawn by HSB, one ~3lb female LMB and one ~3lb BC were stocked last fall.

ALL BG caught are being removed other than large males.

How ‘bout one “grinnel” to assist the other predators in BG control?

That she would. We have a lake near us that if we really want somehthing different we go there with steel leaders and slap on half a bluegill. Toss them out and wait. Heavy line and a stiff pole a must. Great fight!

I don't know the bowfins appetite. Since, it's your waterhole, I'm itching for you to try it.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

How far North do Bowfins/Grinnels live?

Caught 'em in northern Minnesota...they're probably swimming under the arctic ice. Dang things can live in a septic tank...

Dave if they fight as hard as I remember as a teenager fishing in East Texas, they can tear up my tackle anytime...
Want to see if can help control BG over-populaltion.

I'm anxious to know the results. I will understock on LMB pending your report. I dont want to be overrun with runt bass. Thinking of a few hsb, plus seining/trapping.
The 'cypress trout' or 'choupique' will make da line sing.

Todd Overton is going to save one if he shocks one up sometimes in the future when surveying a pond.

If I stock only ONE of each predator species in our CNBG/HSB pond, there will be no possibility of reproduction (barring the infamous bird stocking theory, or helpful neighbor) and should assist the HSB in controlling over population of BG.

I’ll keep you posted.

FYI, we have a few watersheds here in Eastern Ohio that have bowfin, I just took one last weekend with the fly rod, adding it to my life list, way cool species...but I think Ill pass on adding them to my pond.
