If there is a somewhat uniform layer of clay 36" deep and you want to leave 18" for the bottom do you work that bottom any? If you work it how much do you move off to re-compact it?

Hate to see no responses to this yet, so I will try to give a few thoughts. But there are a lot of unknowns to your situation, so it makes it tough.

First off, I have a hard time imagining a situation that would have a 36" layer of clay that would be bowl shaped like a pond. Is this a previous made pond?

Next, its always best to do it right the first time. So, if you have the right equipment there to do the job. I would compact it. That requires a sheepsfoot roller. That leads to the next thing. If you have the right equipment, then do it like most suggest. Take out to the depth needed, then pack the clay back down in 6" layers till you get at least an 18" thick liner over the whole bottom.

If its a 36" layer of clay that has never been touched, and you can't compact it, I would leave it alone. Nature probably has packed it down good over the centuries, and any lessoning it will just make it vulnerable. Its just hard to tell if there is an area that is not as thick as the rest when you haven't put it down. You may think it is all 36", but what to say one spot may only be 2"?
