I'm renovating a 2 acre pond in central texas. It's currently dry and numerous trees (mesquite, liveoak and cedar) have grown-up around it. Are there some general guidelines to follow that will improve the site's ablity to attract doves (mourning and whitewing) for hunting?

They like to walk down to water, so having a gentle slope where the dirt meets the water, and not having tall grass close to the pond that might hide predators. That will encourage them to use the pond as a watering hole. Having some trees nearby for them to land in before they fly down for water is good too, although it's not a deal breaker.

We have TONES! of doves but I never felt the compultion to shoot them. Our evergreens are filled with them.

The bare ground allows the doves to feel safer from predation.

That bare ground around tanks is getting a lot easier to find.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

For this year create a small mud hole down in the bottom and you will be covered up with dove assuming it don't rain before opening day. We built a 5 acre pond a few years ago that only caught a small back yard swimming pool of water before the season and we were completely covered up with birds. This pond was surrounded by food plots maze fields. The next year it was full and there were no birds to be had.

Put up dove decoys when you hunt. They are social birds.

Rocky - Too bad you're in the Waco area; otherwise I'd eagerly volunteer to help defend your pond later this week grin

There were 12 doves sitting in a dead tree by the pond this a.m. With the water down 24" there is a lot of exposed shore. They grit and water there.
