Pond Boss
Hello, I have a pond I was looking to expand and wanted to know if anyone had any references for someone who does reliable work in my area. Someone who is knowledgeable about how much water runoff is available for construction and how to build a pond that is ideal for bass fishing would be a preferred. Also, any suggestions for building a lake for fishing (depth, structure, etc.)are welcomed. Lake will be anywhere for 1/2 to 2 acres depending on what is attainable with the runoff we have. Thanks.

Some of the information you want can be got right here. Drainage is obtained from the maps, but the first question is this.

You have an existing pond does it over flow when it rains? how full does it stay? This information will get you going in the direction of how big you can build it.
Hi Mike, the pond will overflow to the point where the dam washed out...when rain stops it will usually hold water to about 3 feet deep in the middle. It takes a hell of a flood to get to that point and we haven't seen that much water in years. It currently has about 3 feet of water in middle due to 2 to 3 inches of rain this month. The pond was full before dam washed out many years ago. There is plastic type material on part of pond in addition to some bentonite that the previous owner hauled in to stop leakage so that may be a problem. Had a guy from Triple S recommend a pond liner and he is giving me an estimate to widen pond a bit and taper the pond gradually with a stair-step design that he said was good for fishing in addition to a pond liner with dirt on top and bottom to prevent game from damaging liner. We have a well at the house by the pond so we can use some water from that, but the well has gotten close to going dry in summer months so we have to use sparingly. Is there any thing I need to look out for with using a pond liner? Thanks
It sounds like this pond has been worked on at least twice. That tells us to be careful. A liner may be your best bet, but again lets be careful.
All liners must be covered with dirt the life of a liner is determined by that. Not just protection from wildlife but also the SUN.
Structure can be built on top of the covered liner.

NOW How much water does your well produce?

An inch of water over an acre is 27,000 gallons.
A one acre pond that averages ten foot of depth will have 3,250,000
gallons when full. Lets do some math before you spend any real money.
