RALEIGH – A last-minute decision to go fishing with his mother netted a 13-year-old from Rocky Mount a North Carolna freshwater fish state record.

Travis Jackson reeled in a 4-pound, 15-ounce redear sunfish (shellcracker) from a private pond in Edgecombe County May 19, using a worm as bait. The fish measured 15 1/16 inches in length and 18 1/8 inches in girth.

Very nice and an incredible girth, and it comes from a private pond to boot!

What a great story.

The RES wasn't only 2 or 3 snail meals short of five pounds, look at the belly on it!!!

What are you trying to say, Brettski?

Bob = a world record RES

No way - Bob is not mean as a RES not even a small one. \:D

I'm thinking Brettski's picture comment has something to do with the similarity of Bob's belly and the belly of that monster RES.

Looks like the RES already spawned. It may have weighed 2-3 more Oz. pre-spawn.

That's spectacular. It made my day to read that. Thanks, Shorty!

Boy, I just have way too little experience with Lepomis that size to think one way or the other on that question. Over 4 pounds, they are just shaped weird.
Posted By: ewest Re: New NC Redear Record - 06/13/08 12:17 AM
Probably lost more like 12 ozs. A 25% weight loss is common during the spawn for BG (Lepomis) and LMB .

Unless this kid is like 7' tall, I'm questioning the weight.
Posted By: ewest Re: New NC Redear Record - 06/13/08 02:50 AM
Sunil the fish was weighed on a grocery store scale and on a certified scale by a State Game and Fish guy - what is to question ?

I would like to see more pics at diff. angles. It is weird that the tail is torn as in fanning a nest, but the belly is sunken in as a female.??
Posted By: Sunil Re: New NC Redear Record - 06/13/08 12:36 PM
It just seems like it is not big enough to register as a 5 lb. fish (or just under 5 lbs.).

I guess I'm only questioning it in my mind. I not saying there's any high-jinks going on.

I wonder how long it's been dead in that photo.
Posted By: burgermeister Re: New NC Redear Record - 06/13/08 02:59 PM
It doesnt look as big as http://www.fishinpals.net/Giant_Bluegill.html

"Holyoak's hybrid bream grow at a rate 300 times faster than the pure-strain species. "

By my estimation, Holyoak's Georgia Giants will put on approximately 60 pounds of body mass per year.

Those following his pond management and feeding program..........will be broke in a year.

Yea Bruce........

I tried the math too. How does 300 times get close to his estimation for the growth to be equivalent between 6 months and 24 months?

It's called "Hogzilla" math.

In defense of the article, if there is a defense, I think 300% was the intention. But who knows, it's still a bunch of 'hogwash'.

I get a lot of big female largemouth bass in to mount that have worn down tails. Since the female largemouth bass does not fan the bed, it would seem there is another cause for a worn down caudal fin. Maybe old age?
