Yes if you put them in a river or BIG public lake, they tend to swim away or they might get eaten by catfish....or even caught by other fisherman.

Lets not run Animals off with smartass comments. I'm guessing he/she is talking about an aquarium or water trough. If you want them to grow and don't have minnows growing in your pockets, you need to find some that are pellet trained--A bass needs 9 or 10 pounds of forage fish to gain a pound.
If you are asking about a lake or river...go plastic!

Do you mean you want to raise a bass in a bucket of water, a fish tank, an aquarium, a kiddie pool?

Members I think we have a young person here with this question.

Animals. I have been in your situation many years ago. This is what I have learned.

Bass largemouth and smallmouth are sport fish and most sport fish belong at least in a pond setting with at least thousands of gallons. If you are a beginner with this, first start by raising goldfish or some other fish that is better suited for life in a tank or container. As you gain experience raisisng fish, and this process will no doubt end up killing numerous undeserving fish and as more money becomes available for raising larger fish then move up to raising a bluegill or green sunfish. These fish adjust well to tank life and can be aggressive to live foods similar to a bass.

One or two small 2"-3" bass should be in a tank that holds a minimum of 50 gallons of water and several real good power water filters so the fish can adequately eat, swim, excercise and grow and not have to live in a small area with its daily waste products/manure. Putting any size bass in a tank smaller than 50 gallons is like making you live only in your room or a prison cell and you are not allowed out.

animal,What I would do is find a near-by creek (hopefully secluded) build small dams, catch fish, feed them (bread)and generally just get familiar with being around water. Unless there
is a big storm these fish will stay pretty close
to home. Eventually you'll be ready to expand
and maybe build a small pond etc. Don't be
discouraged or give up!

Animals, If you return to this site and if you are a youth as Bill Cody suspects, I hope that you will consider a tour of duty in the Marine Corps as you approach the age of eighteen. You would be profoundly happy with as well as most supportive of the ban on "cussing" to which all members of that organization subscribe. This is especially true of the initial first few weeks spent at Parris Island being introduced to the niceties you will enjoy during your tour of duty. As a further incentive, a certain maturity is imparted there as well a quite different perspective that would be of lifelong benefit to you.

animals, if you are still on the site, welcome aboard, and hopefully the few curse words will be forgotten. as far as where you can put bass, unfortnately, most of us don't have the money to build a big aquarium like you may see at bass pro shops!! i would talk to some folks around your area, and maybe if you find someone with a pond or lake, you could dress appropriately, knock on their door, and introduce yourself and maybe you could offer an exchange of fishing for mowing/working around the property. i have done that before and most of the time it works. one time, a buddy of mine and i in iowa asked a guy if we could fish his pond in exchange for work around his farm. he had us move a few dead trees and then he let us fish. we would pick up any trash that anyone left. he also said he let us fish because we simply asked. so many people would just walk in/sneak on his pond, and he would kick them off the pond. hope this helps. again, welcome to the site. mark

Aw, shucks, Sunil, it weren't nuthin. My tongue is still stuck in my cheek from that one. I thought yours was the greatest. Brief and right to the point and most apt considering the original post. Exactly what I would have written if I had had the maracas to do it. I had read the original post before anyone responded and went whaaaaat, then came back later to read the responses. Of course, I read them in sequence, and after getting through yours, I was cracked up. Your timing and content were perfect.
Then I read Bill's perceptive post and Animals obvious displeasure at such blatant profanity. It was then that I realized that a few weeks of exposure to a couple of mild-mannered drill instructors could really benefit Animals. I certainly hope that he/she considers my advice.
Of course, Mark's posts are always good and I've noticed that he's been posting more lately having evidently found a way to get on his machine between feedings and diaper changes and getting up with those bloodshot eyes to go to the office. he he he.

Dudley, I remember hearing about mild mannered DI's. Can't say that I have any personal knowledge of same. Not that they didn't have any touchy-feely in them. It's just that all of the touching and feeling came via boot soles. Rude bunch as I recall but they did understand the basics of motivation.

Not so, Dave. DIs are actually dedicated, goal oriented educators, and it is amazing that they are able to transform what they get into what they produce. Wish I could get a book on the psychology of USMC basic training.

ric, i promise you, i was thinking the exact same thing about dudley. i've gotten to know dudley via emails as well, and he always has such words of encouragement and wise reflection. i was thinking about a comment like "dudley, how about a book like the .."Deep Thoughts, by Jack Handy"...but instead of course it would be "Deep Thoughts by Dirty Laundry, I mean Dudley Landry!" (saturday night live previously had a skit named deep thoughts by jack handy)

as far as military stuff, my dad was a naval pilot for 25 years and a Naval Academy grad, and great father. it was yes sir and no sir etc. I thought my name was come here "I'll beat that little A**) until i was about 15!!! Many times me and my siblings would ask my parents "why can't you just be our friend like so and so's parents?" dad would say, "son, i am not your friend, i'm your father. would a father beat that little a** like i'm about to?" as we got older, we understood, and had a foundation and discipline, then he was our friend. maybe hard to understand for some folks, but it worked; next to Jesus I think my dad is the most wonderful man that walked the earth. he explained to us often why, but then other times would say "because i said so"!! some of my friends would come over and ask my dad for advice before they headed off to boot camp. I have to say I'm with you on this one mark.
I've been mildly curious about animals also. ALL the cussing he was refering to was one word. Granted I would prefer there were none but it wasn't that far across the line.
I'm beginning to wonder if all the cylinders are firing in order.

This sounds like a cross between a Marine DI and a 30 year Bosun Mate. And I loved your description of your Dad. Mine only spent 2 years in the Army but he was a big fan of discipline. I was on the receiving end of that discipline on many occasions After a few years in the Navy I was able to appreciate my Dads approach much more than I did as a teenager. I found that after my first 10 years in the Navy that I was sounding more and more like my Dad all the time!

Actually, you would probably have gotten little help with chickens on this site. In fact, all I know about chickens is that some dogs like them. Strangely, I learned this from a ten year old boy who told me "I had a chicken oncet but the dog et it."
